As we move into a our AUTUMN SEASON, we move into a NEW CYCLE, a NEW PHASE of our YEAR and a new phase of our LIFE. In Autumn our energy starts to change and we BEGIN TO TURN INWARD. Spring and Summer are our expansive seasons energetically, while Autumn and Winter are contractive. Our Yang and our Yin working synergistically
AS THE SEASONS CHANGE SO DO WE, our connection with our environment and with our universe means that we will NATURALLY FEEL the subtle and sometimes not so subtle changes around us
Autumn is the time that our energy starts to get a little CALMER and a little QUIETER, we begin to slow down and become more INTROSPECTIVE as the weather gets cooler
Our YIN and YANG Yoga classes are aligned with Traditional Chinese Medicine Meridians and 5 Element Theory. The 5 Elements represent each of the 5 seasons ( Earth Element/ Indian Summer being the 5th). Each season and element is aligned with 2 or more organs and their associated energy meridians. For each Season/Element we can experience states of being IN BALANCE or we can experience being OUT OF BALANCE
Autumn is our METAL ELEMENT and is associated with our Lung and Large Intestine energy. Our Lungs and Large Intestine are our ELIMINATION organs, they ABSORB WHAT IS GOOD FOR US and LET GO OF WHAT ISN’T. So our theme for Autumn is LETTING GO
In the process of letting go of WHAT NO LONGER SERVES, we in turn CREATE SPACE for NEW THINGS THAT DO !
It’s a constant FLOW and CYCLE of change that can happen almost EFFORTLESSLY if we ALLOW it. Our SUFFERING comes when we try to HANG ON TIGHTLY to THOUGHTS/HABITS/EMOTIONS/RELATIONSHIPS/PATTERNS & BEHAVIOURS that are not supporting us in becoming the BEST VERSION OF OURSELVES
If we try to hang onto CONTROL or try to control things that are ESSENTIALLY OUT OF OUR CONTROL, our energy becomes STUCK,BLOCKED & HEAVY, which cause us to become OUT OF BALANCE
If our LUNG energy is out of balance we will experience feelings of GRIEF, LOSS, SEPARATION, HOPELESSNESS and A LACK OF SELF WORTH. If we are in balance and nourishing our Lung energy we will experience feelings of HOPE, VITALITY and OPTIMISM
If our LARGE INTESTINE energy is out of balance we will feel STUCK, STUBBORN and JUDGEMENTAL (of ourselves and of others ). If we are in balance and nourishing our Large Intestine energy then we will feel FLOW and DISCERNMENT, we will easily know what serves us and what doesn’t, without getting stuck in repetitive UNRESOURCEFUL thought patterns or behaviours
As we change with the seasons, so does our YOGA PRACTICE. To nourish and support ourselves through Autumn our yoga starts to include more CHEST OPENING poses to open the Lungs and also poses like PIGEON/SLEEPING SWAN and SHOELACE where we can access the LI meridian that runs down the outside of the thighs
I always love the analogy of the trees losing their leaves in this season. As we move into Winter we need to CONSERVE all of our energy, so we shed our leaves, the things that don’t support and nourish us. What this means is that in our lowest energy months, we are not LEAKING ENERGY on things that are no longer for our HIGHEST GOOD
It is with this practice and this intention that we SHED THE OLD TO MAKE WAY FOR THE NEW. We ACKNOWLEDGE and HONOUR our PAST EXPERIENCES and we MOVE FORWARD with GRATITUDE
